What does a doula do?

The American Pregnancy Association said it well when they described a doula as "a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. The doula's purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience."

Ok... so what does that mean?

It means that you have unlimited access to us throughout your pregnancy  to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding labor, options, if what you're feeling is normal, etc. We are super familiar with pregnancy and birth meaning that we can often put you at ease and we know when to encourage you to reach out to your medical provider. We help prepare you for the work of labor and birth by discussing common interventions and helping you outline your birth wish list (or birth plan). We also talk about Plan Bs just in case so we know how to best support you when the time comes to meet your little one.

When labor does start, we come when you are ready for extra support. We are trained in natural pain relief techniques through the use of massage, counter-pressure, accupressure points, etc. as they relate to labor to make your labor faster and more bearable. Most of our clients achieve a natural unmedicated birth because of our skilled presence supporting them through the hard work that is labor. Once baby arrives, we typically stay for 1-2 hours afterward to make sure you and baby are settled and the nursing relationship has been established.

We continue to be available for questions and advice during those early weeks and will come by for a final postpartum visit around one week postpartum to check in to make sure you and baby are doing well physically and emotionally. Postpartum doula services are also available should you like extra support.

*Our birth doula fee includes both prenatal visits, unlimited labor support, and one postpartum follow-up visit.
